Good Practice Seminar
Work Experience for Young People -Thursday 25th September 2008, (times to be confirmed) at Longslade Community College, Birstall This seminar will include a look at the business benefits of getting involved in work experience, with case studies of those organisations in the public service which have successfully offered work experience opportunities. The seminar will also provide advice and guidance to support organisations considering offering work experience placements. Booking details will be available shortly.

Regional Apprenticeship Project - Dissemination Event - 18th June 2008, Park Hill Golf Club, Seagrave, Leicestershire
The LLCLP has been the lead of a regional project, supported by the LSC - aimed at finding ways to increase take up of apprenticeships within the Public Sector. On Wednesday, 18th June, an event was held at the Park Hill Golf Club, in Leicestershire, to provide an update of activity so far, and an opportunity to discuss ideas and ways forward. Leicestershire Public Service Compact Launch Event - 12th March 2008, at National Space Centre, Leicester
On Wednesday 12th March, over 70 delegates attended the Launch, at the National Space Centre, in Leicester. Rebecca Rhodes, the Skills Director - Sectors, from the LSC National Office, gave a national perspective on how the work of the Compacts across the region are supporting the national and regional agendas. Mickey Burke shared the achievements of the West Midlands PSC, of which has been in place for a number of years. Howard Robinson, the Chair of the PSC, gave an overview of the many achievements of the Leicestershire Compact and invited attendees to suggest important areas to focus collaborative work and to make a formal commitment to the Compact. > Members Charter, Achievements and Suggestion Form.

Recruiting and Supporting People from groups in the Community who are under represented in your workforce - 22nd Feb 2008 (9.30am-12.30pm) at Longslade Community College, Birstall All organisations are looking to improve the ways in which they recruit and support people in order to create a more diverse workforce which reflects the local community. This session enabled delegates to exchange information and ideas about the methods organisations have adopted and the results of their experience.
We had presentations from the County Council, City Council, Police and Fire & Rescue and areas covered included looking at recruiting from BME communities, recruiting women into non- stereotypical occupations and recruiting disabled people.

Due to the enthusiasm of the presenters and an unexpected fire alarm!! time did not allow for table discussions. However, this event was well received by the delegates, with positive comments such as these:
"It was enlightening to learn of good recruitment practice in the region and an ideal opportunity to network with other recruitment specialists" "Gave a practical insight into the way to be brave enough to target under represented groups"

West Midlands Approach to Public Service Apprenticeships - 5th Feb 2008 (10.30am-12.30pm) at Donington Park Farmhouse Hotel, Castle Donington A look at the West Midlands Administration Apprenticeship, including the background to its development, the package, examples of use, marketing and other possible uses. With discussions of the possible ways forward in the East Midlands.

Motivational Interviewing - 16th Nov 2007 (9am-12.30pm) at Longslade Community College Around performance management - led by Jackie Rossa, Assistant Director of Quality, EMCETT The seminar looked at exploring the use of Motivational Interviewing as a management tool to effectively and respectfully assist staff in responding to change in a positive way. Based on the notion that the management of change, both organisationsl and personal, is one of the most significant and challenging aspects of effective management practice. This session looked at the implementation of change as a process, understanding the nature of staff response and identifying useful strategies to help staff prepare for and accept change.
Some of the feedback from this seminar include: "Good opportunity to interact with others". "It’s been a worthwhile session, I now need to reflect on how to use it!”

A Review of the Breakfast Briefing - 23rd Mar 2006 More than 40 senior Public Sector managers attended a Breakfast Briefing in Leicester last month. The event addressed the opportunities for delegates to share their ideas and experience, to help shape and to sign up to Leicestershire's Public Services Sector Compact. The aim is to roll out the Compact regionally in 2006/07. The Briefing provided an opportunity for discussion on 4 topics: - Leadership and management - Recruitment and retention - Mentoring and shadowing - Apprenticeships
